TALAHONG FESTIVAL

Kasayahan sa Capiz join Talahong festival is a combination of two words – “tala” for “talaba” (oysters) and “hong” from the word tahong (mussels), which are both shellfoods.  Every 1st week of May, Talahong Festival is celebrated as a thanksgiving for  the abundant harvest of talaba and tahong.  During the Talahong Festival, big and meaty mussels and oysters are sold for a low price.  People from the Municipality of Sapian also start dancing along the street in honor of their patron.

Guyum - Guyuman Festival

Kasadyahan sa Capiz at Guyum-guyuman Festival was taken from the town’s old name: “Caguyuman,” meaning anthill. People from nearby municipalities of Pan-ay, Panitan, Maayon and Pres. Roxas would thrive in the market place like swarms of ants for trading. This rich tradition is now a celebration of life and thanksgiving for all “Caguyumanons.”

The town ofin 1853 at the present site of Barangay Sublangon. Formerly the town was a part of Panay, being the first settlement in the Province of Capiz.

Three years after the town leaders decided to transfer the poblacion to its present site because of the accessibility to the mouth and the big and navigable Agbalo River. When General Crespo passed a decree making it an independent town from Panay only in the year 1853.

“CAGUYUMAN” a term descriptive of the Place of “Ants” or “Ant Hill”, the native of the town call that place. This had been because during that time the market days of the town attracted to a very large number of people from the neighboring town and far way places. This people came to town like swarms of ants, on foot, bullcarts in bancas and sailboats. Hence, the name was “CAGUYUMAN”.

 The name was changed to Pontevedra , when the town has its own independent parish. After the town was established through the request of General Moriones, that was 24 years later. The request was granted 2 years after and Father Gregorio Hermida was the first Spanish Friar found the striking resemblance of the town with that of his hometown in Pontevedra. Henceforth through his influence the town was named “PONTEVEDRA”.

Panay, Capiz

Kasadyahan sa Capiz honor the Panay-ayanun. Lingga-anay Festival is the annual Municipal Fiesta of Panay celebrated to pay homage to the Biggest Bell in Asia and to display the town’s rich cultural history together with its vast marine resources. The Festival boasts a one-of-a-kind street dance accompanied not by drum beats but of rondalla, which are the distinct feature of ecotis. The Festival is a milestone in the history of Panay because it highlights the cooperation of the public officials and the residents of the town.

Kasadyahan sa Capiz, Talahong has been derived from two words “talaba” and “tahong”.

 Sapian celebrates the Tilibyugan and Religious Fiesta from July 21 – 26 every year . It has been observed for a few decades with its own distinctiveness in preserving the cultural practice and traditions. The feast is celebrated in honor of the Patron Saint, Saint Anne.

On the other hand, the birth of Talahong Festival was very enormous. It was conceptualized based on entrepreneurial and tourism purposes to trigger the economic growth of the whole town in Kasadyahan sa Capiz.

Hence, showcasing of seafood products particularly the “talaba” and “tahong” is the highlight of the two-day event. It is also the infusion of arts and culture that will serve as a tool in promoting Sapian as its best and provide revenue for the fisherfolks, travel, operators, stakeholders and the local government.

The Municipality of Sapian is one of a coastal town that have an Kasadyahan sa Capiz in the Province. On the northern portion of Sapian is Sapian Bay which covers nine out of ten barangays. Talaba and Tahong are very rich in production in these areas. Since Sapian is abundant with seafood products, it was the initiative of the Local Governement Unit to organize a Talahong Festival (Talaba-Tahong) every 2nd Friday and 2nd Saturday of May each year that promotes the local products as its best.

That is why most of its local products are from marine resources. More then a hundred of fisher folks operates as grower, and this is basically the source of income of most of the people living along the coast.

The basis is not only the capacity of production to supply the market demand, but because the main selling point is the distinct taste compared to talaba and tahong produced from other.

Talahong is conceptualized based on entrepreneur and tourism purposes of showcasing seafood products particularly the tahong and talaba. It is also identified as Sapian’s flagship commodity.

The place is a favorite weekend spot for the local populace and those coming from nearby towns and provinces. Considered a “must not miss” spot in Roxas City, Baybay beach is ideal for swimming, snorkeling, and kayaking. It has a seven-kilometer stretch of sugar-fine, glittery, ebony sand. The water sometimes washes up to the shore a substance known as “margaha” to the locals, which is fine iron particles that an ordinary magnet can pick up and collect!
